3 Easy Ways to Select Your Gemstone

A common question I’ve been asked is: “does an engagement ring must be a diamond ring?” the answer is simply, No. While the recent tradition of an engagement ring is a diamond ring, it can be any other precious stone you’d like it to be. One of the most famous example of this is Princess Dianna’s Blue Sapphire engagement ring given to her by Prince Charles and later given to Kate Middelton by Prince Williams.

An engagement ring and any other luxurious jewelry is a personal gift to give the one you love and the more personalized the jewelry is the more it shows that you know the other person, and knowing that they do not like a diamond ring or prefer a different precious gemstone for one reason or another in the their jewelry, shows that you’ve paid attention and took the time and effort to design your own engagement ring or the one of a kind custom jewelry.

If you do not know the exact gemstone that your loved one likes the most – for suggestion of how to figure it out please check our article about How to Find the Right Diamond – there are three easy options to help you decide what gemstone is the right one for you: Birthstone, zodiac sign, and color.

1. Birthstones:

The most common way to choose the gemstone is by choosing it by the birthstone of the month they were born. The association of each month to its stone has been determined and passed down through many generation until the birthstone list has been created as the following*:

  • January: Garnet

  • February: Amethyst

  • March: Aquamarine, Bloodstone

  • April: Diamond

  • May: Emerald

  • June: Alexandrite, Pearl, Moonstone

  • July: Ruby

  • August: Peridot, Sardonyx

  • September: Sapphire

  • October: Opal, Pink Tourmaline

  • November: Topaz, Citrine

  • December: Tanzanite, Turquoise, Blue Zircon

2. Zodiac sign

Another way to select the right gemstone for you and your loved one is by the zodiac gemstone, while there are still different versions and some zodiacs have more than one associated gemstones this is the traditional and most common list*:

  • Aquarius (January 21 – February 19): Sapphire

  • Pisces (February 20 – March 20): Amethyst

  • Aries (March 21 – April 20): Ruby

  • Taurus (April 21 – May 20): Golden Topaz

  • Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21): Citrine

  • Cancer (June 22 – July 22): Moonstone

  • Leo (July 23 – August 23): Garnet

  • Virgo (August 24 – September 23): Emerald

  • Libra (September 24 – October 23): Peridot

  • Scorpio (October 24 – November 22): Aquamarine

  • Sagittarius (November 23 – December 21): Spessartite Garnet

3. Color

The third way of selecting the center stone for the gemstone to be in your engagement or other jewelry is by selecting it by your loved one’s favorite color. Precious gemstones have a wide range of colors from the classic red, blue and green to purple, pink, orange, some gemstones have a color combination of red white and green, or a beautiful color play of blue and violet as seen in Tanzanite.

Some gemstones have multiple color selections like sapphire that can be found in the commonly known blue, but also in yellow, green, pink and other colorful shades. And Garnet can be green, red and orange as the three most common colors to it. Giving you a combination of the three ways of selecting the right gemstone by combining the color and birthstone or color and zodiac stone, making it sometimes more special and easier to find the perfect gemstone to express your love.

While the thought of selecting a jewelry and especially an engagement ring can be frightening at first because of the large selection of gemstones that are available following these three suggestions can make your experience much more easier than initially thought making your search and creation experience much more positive.
